Re: Steering Committee Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 pm
Dear Parents:
International Night was fantastic! We would like to thank everyone who came for making it such a good time. The food and entertainment was outstanding. It was a wonderful celebration of our diverse cultures.
The fourth quarter of the school year started this week. Teachers are getting their quarter grades into the system this week. We plan to mail report cards on Thursday.
We would like to encourage all parents to come to the CHOICE Steering Committee meeting on Thursday, April 25 at 6:30 pm. We will be discussing how we have been doing this school year, our transition to having 6th Grade students, the new trimester schedule planned to begin for 2020-21 School Year, and whatever any parent, student or staff member would like to discuss. If you cannot make the meeting and would like to have something discussed, please email me and I will read the email to the Committee.
CHOICE is getting bigger every year. We are looking for volunteers to help with lunch duty. It would mean chaperoning students during lunchtime from 12:10 pm until 12:45 pm. If there is anyone interested, please call or email me.
Please encourage your students to read.

Re: Teacher Appreciation Week May 6-10th Brunch: Monday, May 6, 2019 • 7:30am - 1:00pm
Hello CHOICE Families,
Teacher Appreciation Week is coming up in a few weeks (May 6-10th) and we are planning a Teacher/Staff Brunch Buffet to be served Monday, May 6th and we would love some help! The buffet will start first thing in the morning at 7:30 in Dolly Knuth's office, with items being served throughout the day. The plan is to have breakfast casseroles, a yogurt/parfait bar, fresh fruit, sandwiches, salads, etc. If you would like to bring something for the buffet, a list of desired items is attached. Though there are some specific items requested, please feel free to bring items of your own choosing. Please plan to drop off items with your student on the morning of the 6th (or the Friday afternoon before if items are not perishable).
Additionally, the PSO, typically hands out small gifts to the staff throughout the rest of the week, and we would love to have some help with that this year! Some of our ideas are below. If you are able to help out by making/purchasing something in this list (or if you have an idea of your own), please reply to this e-mail.
- Homemade gifts (jam, infused salt or sugar, flavored creamer);
- Notes of appreciation from students/families;
- Pre-paid carwash at Brown Bear (about $8.00/wash);
- Small plants, seedlings;
- Classroom supplies or gift cards;
- Coffee/Chocolates

Re: Reminder of 10th Grade Meeting (Flyer attached)
REMINDER: Monday April 1st at 6:00 p.m. at CHOICE Academy
Hello 10th Grade Families,
Our current 10th grade students and their families are cordially invited to the 4th Annual Running Start & Career Start Informational Night at CHOICE Academy.
Everyone will have the opportunity to hear directly from the Academic Advisers at Highline College on how eligible juniors and seniors can earn high school and college credit by taking courses at a local college.
If your student is planning to attend a different college other than Highline College, i.e. South Seattle, Green River, Seattle Central, Bellevue, etc., the information is general and very useful.
I will follow up with students individually to help with their desired path and all the steps along the way.
Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to seeing everyone on Monday, April 1st at 6:00 p.m. at CHOICE Academy.

Re: Multicultural Night
Dear Parents:
I was reminding a parent about our upcoming Multicultural Night. She said to me "Oh, International Night, yes, we are planning to attend." With that, we have decided to change the name of our Multicultural Night to International Night. We want to remind everyone that our International Night is this coming Thursday, March 28th starting at 6:30 pm. There will be wonderful food and fantastic entertainment from all over the world. We are inviting everyone to come to this wonderful evening where we celebrate our diversity and share each other’s culture.
It's official! The District has added five more school days to the school year. Our last day of school will be Tuesday, June 25th. The third quarter of the school year ends on Friday, April 5th. April 5th is also the last day of school before Spring Break. Spring Break is April 6th through April 14th.
Please encourage your students to read.

Re: 10th Grade Government & Civics Field Trip to Olympia
Hello Parents and Guardians of CHOICE Academy’s 10th Grade Class,
I am emailing you a field trip permission slip (your students also have a paper copy they brought home today) for our field trip to Olympia on Thursday April 4, 2019.
The 10th grade class has been learning about state government and researching bills that are actively being debated in our state right now. In two weeks they will be meeting with their elected officials to advocate for a bill they have researched and to witness the legislative process in person.
In order to meet with the senator and representatives from each student’s district, we will be leaving CHOICE at 9 am and returning to CHOICE at 3:30 pm on Thursday April 4, 2019. I know that this makes it so that some students cannot attend due to the Spain trip or work/family obligations. Students who cannot attend in person will make short videos advocating for their position which we will bring with us to Olympia.
For those that can attend, please help your student return their permission slip and $15 payment to Ms. Browning by next Thursday—March 28, 2019. Scholarships are available, let me or the office know if your student needs one.
Finally, I am looking for at least two chaperones. If you have availability to join us, please sign up to come! Chaperones would be matched with a small group of 5-10 students from the same legislative district and a custom itinerary of appointments with senators/representatives.
Feel free to email me any additional questions,

Re: 2nd Semester is Here
Dear Parents:
We had a fantastic Open House. I would like to thank all the parents for their continued support. We have 109 applications for new students for t
he 2019-20 School Year. Families with siblings had to complete the application by January 31st, and they will be automatically accepted. The lottery will be on March 1st. We will start interviews for all new students on March 7th.
March 7th and 8th are the days set aside for Spring Conferences. Spring Conferences will be from 3:00 pm until 6:30 pm on March 7th and from 8:30 am until Noon on March 8th. There is no school on March 8th. Spring Conferences are for parents and students who want to meet with teachers or for students when teachers feel that they need to meet with parents. Teachers will be contacting parents in the very near future. Any parent who would like a conference, please contact your student's teachers. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
The first semester is over. We are mailing out report cards today. With the beginning of the new semester, we would like to once again emphasize being on time to school ready to learn. That means students should have plenty of sleep the night before each school day, and have eaten a good breakfast.
We have had some issues with students playing computer games during classes. If we catch a student, he or she will not be allowed to use any technology in class for a period to be determined by the teacher.
Mid-Winter break will be from February 15th through February 18th. There will be no school on these days.
Please encourage your students to read.

Re: Party Tomorrow
Thank you to all of you who offered to bring goodies and/or water for tomorrow for the Winter Break Party! We are counting on you as there are not as many families who volunteered to bring treats. ASB will be purchasing pizza for the school and then we will be enjoying your yummy homemade or store bought treats! We break around 11:15AM. The kids will be able to eat and enjoy each other’s company before our nice long break! School is dismissed at our regular time for Friday.
I would like to say to each of you, “Merry Christmas and Happy New Year”! Thank you for sharing our kids with us! You have fabulous kiddos! I enjoy getting to know them better and hanging with them for half the day during the week. You are blessed parents! Remember to take time and be still during the holidays. Be purposeful about spending time together enjoying each other’s company while building a stronger relationship with your kids. I say this as I have 3 grown-up boys and I realize how fast time goes by. I look back with the fondest of memories of the years gone by! Now, I get to enjoy my grand-babies and create more memories. I just love each and every moment we have together. I guess maybe that comes with getting old! LOL!
See you January 7th 2019!

Re: October 2018 letter
Dear Parents:
The end of the first quarter of the school year is this Friday, November 2nd. Teachers have until Wednesday, November 7 to input their grades. We will do our best to mail them to you on November 8th. These are interim grades. Students can still improve their grades by turning in missing work and doing better on tests next quarter. Grades become final on the last day of the semester, January 25th, 2019.
There has been an increase of students coming to school late. It's so important for your students to arrive on time and ready to learn. Teachers tell students what they will be learning that period usually during the first few minutes of class. It's also can be very disruptive for the class when students come in late. Beginning November 5th, we plan to have students who are late without a note from a parent excusing the tardy attend Academic Focus at lunch during that day.
On Tuesday, November 6th, CHOICE high school students are taking a field trip to the University of Washington. Permission slips are due tomorrow, October 31. It's a great opportunity to see the campus and learn about their admissions procedures.
As a reminder, if your student is struggling, we have tutoring for Language Arts and Math on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Tutoring is from 2:30 pm until 3:30 pm. All students are welcomed.
Best Wishes,
Re: October 2018 letter
Re: Scheduled Field Trip for all of our 9th-11th
Hello CHOICE families,
Scheduled Field Trip for all of our 9th-11th . On Tuesday, November 6th 2018. We are attending the UW for a tour of the university campus. We were only given 65 spots which are reserved for our high school students. The other students will stay here and it will be school as usual. Again, this is only for 9-11th grade.
There is a $10.00 fee to cover transportation. A permission slip is going home today. Permission slips and money is due no later than October 31st 2018. Ms. Browning is not here on Fridays, so no money can be collected on Fridays!
We will be eating lunch on the campus. Bring a sack lunch or money to purchase food! Please look at the permission slip for all the details.
We are not in need of additional parent chaperones for this one, however, if you are a parent of a student in 9th -11th grade and would like to go, let me know! We will have limited additional space on the bus for you to come along and receive all the valuable information!
Respectfully,

October 2018 Letter
Dear Parents:
The first grading period ended on Thursday, October 4th. We are giving students report cards today during advisory to bring home to their parents. Parents, please, ask your students for their report cards. These are only temporary grades. The grades become final at the end of the semester on January 25, 2019. If a student has a lower grade than you like, he or she has plenty of time to improve his or her grade.
If your student is struggling, we have tutoring for Language Arts and Math on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. All students are welcomed.
As a reminder, we have been asked to have our 8th and 10th Grade students take the Healthy Youth Survey. Our 8th and 10th Grade students will be taking the survey on October 17th during 1st period. Students can "opt out" of individual questions or the entire survey if they are not comfortable answering the questions.
I would like to invite all parents to the CHOICE Steering Committee meeting on October 18th at 6:30 pm at CHOICE. At Steering Committee meetings we discuss any item that a parent, student or staff would like. I will be discussing progress on the latest Smarter Balance Tests, the Three Year Review of our Accreditation, and the 2019-20 School Year schedule. Next year, we will be welcoming 6th Grade students to CHOICE and we will be offering 11th Graders a full schedule at CHOICE. If you can't make the meeting, but would like something to be discussed, please email me, and I will read your email at the meeting. We welcome all parents to this meeting. This meeting is an opportunity for all parents to help our school improve.
Best Wishes,

ASB is putting together a day at Family Fun Center, just like the past 2 years!
*We love to have a fun get-together with the students at CHOICE early in the year and have the opportunity to get to know each other better. Like last year, we decided to reserve a group spot at Family Fun Center for Friday, October 12thth which is a non-school day. The Passes will work between 11:00AM-2:00PM. They are good for 3 hours only. I have arranged a minimum of 50 in order to get the group rate $23.60 ( price includes tax) total per person. With that package, you get:
3 Hours Of:
Ultimate Group: Unlimited Go Karts, Bumper Boats/Cars, Mini Golf, Laser Tag & Kidopolis plus one "You Pick" Attraction, & 30 points.
We are so excited to do this again!
1.. We are not officially making this a school event as the liability and paperwork with the district is too much. This will be an opportunity for students to show up and meet other students. Feel free to go yourself and/or bring siblings, especially if your student is a little nervous to be left there alone. Other parents will be there, but we will not be monitoring your student(s). I am going myself, so I can meet and hang out and take pictures, but obviously cannot be responsible for them. I am not a chaperone! Family Fun Center is a safe environment and parents drop off kids there often. This is totally up to you how you handle those arrangements. We are not providing transportation and suggest students car pool with other families if your student needs a ride..
2.. I do need an approximate number of those planning to attend by October 5th. We are not collecting money at school as you will pay at the group counter for the number of tickets you need. (Doors open at 11:00 am)
3. School is out on the 12th, so we decided to go as soon as they open!
4. Once you know how many are attending from your family, let me know, so I can include you in the number for reservation purposes. We have a sign-up sheet that students can fill out if they are planning on going. They can include the number of passes they are purchasing too or you can email me with the student’s name and number of passes you will be purchasing. Parents do not need to purchase a pass to be there to chaperone their kids. They need a pass if they are planning on participating in the fun!

Dear Parents:
It's been really great to see all the smiling faces of our students back at CHOICE. September is a busy month for all of us. There are a few events that I would like for you to take note of. I hope that everyone can make Back-to-School Night. It will be on Thursday, September 20 starting at 6:30 pm. Students will escort their parents from class to class just as during the school day except the schedule will be shortened to 10 minute periods. Back-to-School Night provides parents an opportunity to get to know our teachers, and to ask them any questions that they may have.
Please save the evening of Thursday, October 4th. The Parent Support Organization (PSO) is planning a pot-luck dinner. There will be more details to follow.
At CHOICE we always make attendance a priority. This year, the Highline School District is also making attendance a significant priority. The Highline School Board has changed Policy 3122 - Excused and Unexcused Absences. I have attached an information sheet with this letter. If you would like to read the entire policy, it can be found on the Highline School District website.
We have been asked to have our 8th and 10th Grade students accomplish the Healthy Youth Survey. Students can "opt out" of individual questions or the entire survey if they are not comfortable answering the questions. I have attached an information sheet about the survey.
Tutoring starts on Tuesday, Sep 18th for ELA and on Wednesday, Sep 19th for Math. All students are welcomed.
